Steel joints are used as transition joints to weld aluminium and steel structures together.

The steel joint consists of three layers of metal: steel, pure aluminium (1050A) and corrosion resistant aluminium (5083).

The three layers are bonded together in a vacuum environment using explosives/extremely high partial pressure. Mainly used in shipbuilding and offshore industry.
